Vinyl is back!!

Well … it never really went away, did it ?
If you ask any record collector, it is the sound quality they love the most about vinyl. The music isn’t compressed into ones and zeros or binary sound.
On top of the musical attributes, there is also the element of “collectibility,” i.e. some people may buy vinyl as an investment, in hope that, over time, the records will appreciate in value.
According to a recent report from eBay, they sell more than three million vinyl records each year – that is an average of one every ten seconds !
Furthermore, people collect vinyl because they may want a piece of their past, so nostalgia is also an important element for the record collector. People are also drawn to actually owning a physical product and may enjoy the ritual that is involved in listening to the records.
A new generation is discovering the special allure that vinyl records have, the limited editions, coloured vinyl, picture discs, the album cover artwork and the sound have all lured youngsters in the hobby of collecting vinyl records.

Before you get too excited about the prospect of your Dad’s collection being worth a fortune and climbing up into the attic to look for his boxes of nostalgia – just remember one thing – at any given moment, there may be more than six thousand collectible Beatles’ albums for sale on eBay.  Some sell for thousands of dollars and it is reported that the album that is bought and sold the most in vinyl format is the Beatles’ “White Album.”
Artists such as the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Madonna, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Elvis Presley and even newer artists like Nirvana, Radiohead are sought after. There is also a keen interest in “Northern Soul,” Motown records, old blues recordings as well as jazz, punk and indie vinyl records.
The Collectors’ shop now offers a growing stock of collectible vinyls.
Drop in any weekend you’re in Dublin and looking for a bargain !

The Collectors Shop, War Medals Blackrock Market

Blackrock Weekend Market
Main Street, Blackrock, Co Dublin
New in stock …
Important Irish War of Indpendence group of three medals to Myles McGrane, Dublin
The first medal in this group of 3 is the General Service medal 1919-21 – which was awarded to all those who could prove that they took part in the Irish War of Independence.  This medal is also known as the Black & Tan Medal, or the War of Independence medal.
On 21st January 1941, the Irish Government announced the creation of a medal for those who tool part in the War of Independence. It was issued without ‘Comrac’ bar to those who were not deemed to have been on active service during the War of Independence, but who were members of the old-Irish Republican Army, the Irish Citizens Army, Fianna Eireann and the Cumann na mBann, which was the women’s branch of the Old-IRA.
Men with actual active and armed service such as the famous flying column’s were issued with this medal with the additional ‘Comrac’ bar.  This example has the ‘Comrac’ bar and this signifies that the recipient was an armed member of the IRA during this period.
Only 15,224 medals with the ‘comrac’ bar
and 47,644 without bar have been issued up to 1989.
The second medal in the group is the 1921-71 Survivors’ Medal.  To mark the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, the Irish Government introduced a medal for issue to surviving veterans of the War of Independence – men and women who already held the 1919-1921 medal with or without ‘Comrac’ bar.  This commemorative medal is gilt coloured bronze in the same general design as the 1919-1921 medal, but slighty smaller in size.  This medal is officially known as ‘The Truce Commemorative Medal 1971’
The third medal of the group is the scarcest of the group – the Na Fianna Eireann medal.  One sold last year at Mealy’s Auction for €1,500, plus buyers premium, plus VAT on the premium.  This was not part of a group, and was not asignated to any particular recipient.
The Fianna were founded on the 16th of August 1909 and on the 16th of August 1959 this medal was issued to commemorate their 50th anniversary. The medal was issued by Na Fianna to mark the anniversary and has no connection with either the 1916 Rising or The War of Independence.  It was issued to (or bought) by serving or ex-Fianna members. Some medals may have been issued to ex-Fianna members who served in the Rising or War of Independence and this seems to be the case in this instance.
Fianna Éireann, organized as a youth hurling league, for boys and girls, existed in West Belfast 1903 (according to the witness statement of Bulmer Hobson to the Bureau of Military History 1948). Bulmer Hobson was a member of the I.R.B. and he relocated to Rathfarnham, Co Dublin and the organization collapsed in Belfast.
In Dublin, Hobson became acquainted with Constance Markiewicz, Helena Moloney and others, who were all members of the newly founded Sinn Féin.  They were members of the Drumcondra branch.  It is unclear as to whether it was Markiewicz or Hobson who first had the idea of setting up a Republican Youth Movement in Dublin.

Stamps at the Collectors Shop Blackrock Market

… the best place in Ireland to shop for Irish stamps and postal history
—————————————————————————————————————–
Many people do not realise that Ireland issed the world’s first postage stamp.
As part of the United Kingdon of Great Britain & Ireland, the famous Penny Black stamp was issued in Ireland as well as the rest of the kingdom.
Great Britain Used in Ireland is a category of collecting stamps that were used in Ireland.
Before issue of numbered and name cancels, some postmarks had distinctly Irish variations. e.g. Irish variations of the famous Maltese cross postmarks.
Later on, every postal town/village in Ireland had its own, unique name and number
In time, more post offices were established and some disappeared (and had their numbers taken by other postal towns)
Railway and shipping companies were quick to get in on this – and issued their own unique frankings
During the 1916 Easter Rising all of the equipment in the GPO was destroyed.  Letters and postcards still had to be delivered and the stamps used on them had to be cancelled.  While new franking equipment was being made, the postal authority used an emergency cancel (a barred oval, with Dublin in the centre) – a cancel usually only used on parcels.  When used on low value stamps on an envelope or postcard, this cancel is worth much more than when used on a parcel.
Until the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922 this was the only way to collect Irish stamps and there are still uses that come after 1922 during the Transition Period before new Irish stamps were issued though there are some oddities that allow you to collect Great Britain Used in Ireland for a short time after 1922.
